| Our Mission
We are a group of concerned citizens that includes architects, real estate investors, film professionals, historians, artists, preservationists, and business leaders that rallied together because we are concerned about the fate of the River Oaks Shopping Center (1937), the River Oaks Theatre (1939), the Alabama Theatre/Bookstop (1939), and the Alabama Shopping Center (1940). In spite of being officially designated City Landmarks by the Houston City Council who followed recommendations made by the Houston Planning Commission and the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission,
property owner Weingarten Realty Inc. tore down a portion of the River Oaks Shopping Center in 2007 and plans further redevelopment which threatens all three of these historic Art Deco landmarks with demolition. We want to SAVE OUR LANDMARKS and need your help in this very important and historic endeavor. You can help by spreading the word and by taking action. Sign up here so that we can contact you with updates regarding efforts to save our landmarks. |
