Weingarten Realty Inc. demolished the north curve of the River Oaks Shopping Center on September 4, 2007. We feel that compromising a historic property in this way is an unfortunate choice when there were so many other solutions, including adaptive re-use of that portion, as well as other sites in which to locate the big box Barnes and Noble that is coming to this portion of the center. The River Oaks Shopping Center was city-designated as a historic landmark a week prior to this demolition and we find it ironic that a new crescent will be built in the place of the historic one. Demolition of any kind is damaging from an environmental standpoint because it adds unnecessary waste by filling our overused landfills. The community doesn't want this to happen, as this shopping center and in particular, the movie theatre, is part of our shared history and heritage. On all fronts, it is a shame that this is happening.

We are now more concerned than ever about the fate of the River Oaks Theatre - Houston's longest-running neighborhood movie theatre. Built in 1939, it's a prime example of art deco architecture (see more at Cinema Houston). We encourage you to support the theatre by seeing movies there – your ticket-buying can help save history! We’ll keep you updated as we take further steps to save our landmarks.
